Sohar Aluminium Awareness and
Education Informative Session
On 29 April, Sohar Aluminium Environment,
Health and Safety (EHS) representatives presented
to Government officials, involved in health and environment,
an awareness and educational informative session on
the steps taken by the company to protect the environment.
The objective of this meeting was
to ensure that the Government officials from the various
agencies understand Sohar Aluminium’s commitment
to EHS through its processes, and to listen to any
key concerns on EHS.
Mr. Rick Hynes, Sohar Aluminium’s
EHS Manager, said “We were very pleased to meet
the Government officials. By meeting with our stakeholders,
we establish a relationship of trust and provide them
with transparent and correct information.”
“In the near future, the company
is planning to meet other key stakeholders such as
the Walis of Sohar and Liwa, their communities, and
Women’s associations of Sohar and Liwa”.
“These meetings help in preparing
the community for the smelter start up and will establish
a regular mechanism with key stakeholders for dealing
with concerns”.
Sohar Aluminium’s shareholders are Oman Oil
Company, Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority,
and Alcan. The company was established in September
2004 to construct and operate a single AP35 potline
aluminium smelter with an associated power plant.
The smelter is targeted to start its first production
of hot metal in 2008.
