At
Sohar Aluminium, the well-being of people and environment
comes first. The Company has in place rigorous Environment,
Health and Safety (EHS) standards and practices that
will sustain a culture of zero harm,
and has pioneered a number of initiatives demonstrating
its EHS commitment.
Sohar Aluminium will
be the world’s first smelter to use ‘best-in-class’
Alcan Pechiney AP35 technology, considered the most
advanced, efficient and environment-friendly aluminium
smelting process in the world.
In February 2006, Sohar
Aluminium joined with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU)
and renowned botanist Dr Patzelt, to relocate and replant
140 acacia trees at its Sohar site. This is the first
time such a conservation project has been undertaken
in Oman, and reflects the company’s vision for
a greener and environment-friendly future.
In 2006, Sohar Aluminium
sponsored the 8th Annual Oman Awards for Excellence
in the category of the Environmental award. The newly
introduced Environmental Excellence Award will recognise
companies in Oman that have applied best environment-friendly
practices. Sohar Aluminium decided to sponsor this award
to encourage other companies to follow in their footsteps
in terms of preserving the environment.
Sohar Aluminium became
a corporate member of the Environment Society of Oman
(ESO) in January 2006. The Company lends its support
to various ESO initiatives that help conserve Oman's
natural heritage and raise awareness about environmental
issues.
