Emission control

Aluminium smelting is a clean, quiet and relatively unobtrusive process. However, in order to further protect the environment, Sohar Aluminium has incorporated one of the most advanced emission control systems in the world, and monitoring equipment will be installed for continuous real-time monitoring.

On the technology front, Sohar Aluminium uses the most modern equipment for pollution control. Efficient fume collection systems installed in the main production centres ensure minimum emissions to the atmosphere. We will achieve emissions which will be considered among the lowest emission rates in the industry.

Waste management

The operation of the aluminium smelter will result in a variety of solid and liquid wastes. All of these will be identified and appropriate procedures for handling, storage and disposal will be employed.

Opportunities for waste reduction and for improvements in waste handling are assessed and implemented on a continuing basis. In particular, opportunities to reuse, recycle and recover waste materials are pursued whenever feasible, in an effort to reduce raw material usage and landfill needs.

Sohar Aluminium aims to introduce innovative measures to measurably reduce waste. The company will comply with Omani environmental regulations concerning the management of solid non-hazardous and hazardous wastes..

Water use and recycling

Aluminium smelting is essentially a dry process. However, some amount of water is needed for the cooling process and for cleaning. Sohar Aluminium will use desalinated water to meet potable water requirements at the smelter.

During the construction phase, Sohar Aluminium has set an example in environment conservation with its power plant producing water for the entire project via a temporary desalination facility at the construction site.

Once Operations commence, we aim to minimize the consumption and use of desalinated water and maximize the reuse and recycling of treated waste water. Thus will be achieved by:

  • Carrying out water audits, and identifying high use areas

  • Investigating further opportunities to use treated sewage water
  • Educating and seeking assistance from all staff in reducing water use

In its quest to make Sohar Aluminium a zero effluent discharge smelter, a state-of-the-art industrial effluent treatment system has been put in place. Treated effluence from the sewage treatment plant is recycled for reuse to water the green area around the smelter.
