Environmental Policy

PUTTING THE ENVIRONMENT FIRST

Respect for the environment is a core value of Sohar Aluminium. Its track record of adhering rigorously to stringent Health and Safety standards (EHS) means that it falls firmly within the guidelines outlined by Oman's environment agency (MECA).

Sohar Aluminium's drive to safeguard the environment encompasses everything from construction through to operations and ensures zero harm to the environment and the communities in which it operates.

Emission control

Sohar Aluminium has incorporated one of the most advanced emission control systems in the world, with monitoring equipment installed for continuous real-time monitoring. Efficient fume collection systems installed in the main production centres ensure minimum emissions to the atmosphere. Emissions are montored using CEMS - our Continuous Emissions Monitoring System.

Waste management

The operation of the aluminium smelter results in a variety of solid and liquid wastes. All of these are identified and appropriate procedures for handling, storage and disposal are stringently employed.

Opportunities for waste reduction and for improvements in waste handling are continually assessed and implemented. In particular, opportunities to reuse, recycle and recover waste materials are pursued whenever feasible.

Water use and recycling

Aluminium smelting is essentially a dry process. However, some amount of water is needed for the cooling process and for cleaning. Sohar Aluminium uses desalinated water to meet potable water requirements at the smelter.

In the long term, our aim is to minimize the consumption and use of desalinated water and maximize the reuse and recycling of treated waste water.

In its quest to make Sohar Aluminium a zero effluent discharge smelter, a state-of-the-art industrial effluent treatment system has been put in place. Treated effluence from the sewage treatment plant is recycled for reuse to water the green area around the smelter.
