Sohar Aluminium and
its shareholders, Oman Oil, Adwea and Alcan, have
committed to the development and engagement of people
from the Batinah area as one of the key objectives
for the project.
The development and encouragement
of local business has been identified as a key area
that will contribute towards this objective. Our purpose
is to contribute towards developing the capabilities
of local businesses in the Batinah area so that they
can provide goods and services to SA on competitive
terms.
The development of small
and medium enterprise (SME) is an overall objective
that is promoted by Government policy. SA will work
with other industries in the Sohar area in forming the
Batinah Development Association that will be dedicated
to encourage and facilitate the growth of local businesses
by providing information, business training and a forum
for local business to interact and provide feedback
to the major companies.
Sohar Aluminium also undertakes to support local business
development through its procurement practices and through
the support of programs and initiatives that will support
business in the area.
At the end of August 2007, the Sohar Aluminium projects
had awarded more than US$ 370 million to local businesses
during the construction phase.
Vendor
registration
A key initiative in this area is the establishment of
the online vendor registration
system, which allows Sohar Aluminium to compile
a database of local businesses for procurement during
the smelter’s operations. The database details
companies’ capabilities and areas of specialization
so that when a contract is available, Sohar Aluminium
has a pool of local talent to choose from.
