In celebration of its 10th Anniversary, Sohar Aluminium held on Wednesday, 15th May a special “Iftar” under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Muhana bin Saif Al Lamki, the Governor of North Al Batinah. During the event, that was attended by their Excellencies and officials from the public and private entities, the company also unveiled its 10th annual Sustainability Report which comes as part of its dedication to integrity and operating responsibly. The event was also attended by dignitaries from the local communities, some of the company’s major corporate social responsibility beneficiaries, and business associates.

 

Sohar Aluminium smelter and facilities were inaugurated on 29th April 2009 under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said. A decade later, the company has become a leader in its smelting operations through progressive improvements in its operations and people development.

 

Engineer Said Mohamed Al Masoudi, Chief Executive Officer of Sohar Aluminium stated in his speech during the event: “the Company has now become one of the leading aluminium producers in the region in terms of operational efficiency and product quality. We have always sought to raise, upgrade and improve our Operations by relying on our employees, our most important assets. All these achievements would not have been possible without the efforts, dedication and relentless efforts of our staff”.

 

The CEO continued: “We are also very grateful to all those who contributed to the establishment of the company and those who worked to achieve the dream from the planning and construction stage to the operational stage. We also thank all suppliers, consultants, lenders, and partners for their support throughout these past 10 years”.

 

During the event, Sohar Aluminium shared with its guests a commemorative video that showcases its achievements throughout the past decade. An exhibition was also inaugurated by the Chief Guest showcasing ten of the company’s most valued SMEs, local vendors and CSR beneficiaries who were supported by the company.

 

Since the launch of its operations, Sohar Aluminium has proven to be one of the important sustainable development drivers in the Sultanate and a leader in the transformation of energy resources into a high-value commodity. Having completed 10 years of operations, the Company continues to play an important role in the future of the aluminium industry in the Gulf region and in promoting the Sultanate as a strategic hub for investment. For the future, SA continues developing its plans for aluminium production and power generation.

 

Ensuring the utmost level of transparency, the SA Sustainability Report is certified by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an internationally recognized independent organisation that has pioneered sustainability reporting and offers a transparent review that documents the company’s progressive approach in applying best practices in its operational model. The report provides a detailed overview of the company’s economic, environmental and social contributions and performance. Taking its efforts a step further, the highlights of the report have been published on a leaflet printed on recycled FSC certified paper using soy-based ink to minimise SA’s footprint on the environment while the full report can be accessed electronically on the company’s website www.sohar-aluminium.com .

 

Sohar Aluminium was formed in September 2004 to undertake a landmark Greenfield aluminium smelter project in the Sultanate of Oman. It is jointly owned by Oman Oil Company LLC., Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) and Rio Tinto.
