Sohar Aluminium (SA) held a two-day workshop on scrap aluminium recycling in cooperation with the Environment Authority. This event was a direct outcome of the Aluminium Recycling Forum that was organised by the company earlier this year. Further, it comes in line with Sohar Aluminium’s Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Strategy and its continues efforts towards achieving Net Zero in the Sultanate of Oman.
Continuing the momentum from the Forum, the workshop underscored Sohar Aluminium’s commitment to optimise and improve the aluminium recycling sector in Oman. It served as a platform for key players in the Omani aluminium industry, including recyclers, processors, waste management professionals, government regulators, and policymakers to get a better understanding of the industry and to discuss how it could be improved.
The workshop highlighted the current state of aluminium scrap in the Sultanate of Oman and identified opportunities for potential improvements to in-country recycling. Participants benchmarked current scrap rates against regional and global standards and best practices.
As a leader in aluminium recycling initiatives, Sohar Aluminium organised this workshop to emphasise the significant environmental and economic advantages of effective scrap recycling. With participation from subject matter experts across the aluminium industry, the workshop aimed to educate local stakeholders on the benefits of domestic aluminium scrap recycling, fostering a circular economy that conserves resources and strengthens local industries.
The event featured expert speakers, interactive sessions, and valuable networking opportunities, allowing participants to explore the dynamics of scrap demand and supply in Oman, innovative recycling techniques, and emerging regulations and policies.
Attendees were engaged in insightful discussions and analysis sessions focused on the scrap aluminium market, its challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for enhancing the local recycling landscape. The role of government in regulating the scrap aluminium recycling sector and the incorporation of technological advancements, such as scrap cleaning technology, were also discussed.
This workshop marked a critical step in reshaping the management of the aluminium scrap recycling sector in Oman. Key outcomes included a call for ongoing collaboration among aluminium manufacturers, processors, suppliers, recycling and waste management companies, and government organisations to better understand the sector, understand and introduce new technologies, identify ways to grow the sector and to ensure the establishment of appropriate and adequate regulation.
