 Smelter

 Power Plant

The Sohar Aluminium smelter is located approximately 11km inland from Sohar.

The smelter will consist of :

  • Carbon: The Carbon plant will supply 183 anodes per shift, equalling 200,000 anodes per year and will employ approximately 160 personnel

  • Potline: Sohar Aluminium will have the world's longest potline - more than 1.2km. It will contain 360 pots with the latest AP35 technology. The potline operating current is 350kA, producing 350,000t of Al/year or 2,700kg per pot per day.

  • Casthouse: There will be two automated ingot casting lines and a sow caster. The casthouse will cast up to 350,000mt of aluminium per year.

  • Port facility: Based at Sohar Port, the Sohar Aluminium port facility will comprise a bulk material ship unloader with connecting conveyors to two alumina silos, each with a 60,000mt capacity; and two coke silos, each with a 15,000mt capacity). There is also a liquid pitch receiving facility with two 5000mt liquid pitch tanks.

Products will include liquid metal transferred to local downstream businesses by crucible and primary ingots and primary sows for export. The total annual capacity is 350,000tons.

It is expected that the smelter will begin its first hot metal production by mid-2008.
