The
Sohar Aluminium smelter is located approximately 11km
inland from Sohar.
The smelter will consist
of :
- Carbon:
The Carbon plant will supply 183 anodes per shift,
equalling 200,000 anodes per year and will employ
approximately 160 personnel
- Potline:
Sohar Aluminium will have the world's longest potline
- more than 1.2km. It will contain 360 pots with
the latest AP35 technology. The potline operating
current is 350kA, producing 350,000t of Al/year
or 2,700kg per pot per day.
- Casthouse:
There will be two automated ingot casting lines
and a sow caster. The casthouse will cast up to
350,000mt of aluminium per year.
- Port
facility: Based at Sohar Port, the
Sohar Aluminium port facility will comprise a bulk
material ship unloader with connecting conveyors
to two alumina silos, each with a 60,000mt capacity;
and two coke silos, each with a 15,000mt capacity).
There is also a liquid pitch receiving facility
with two 5000mt liquid pitch tanks.
Products will include
liquid metal transferred to local downstream businesses
by crucible and primary ingots and primary sows for
export. The total annual capacity is 350,000tons.
It is expected
that the smelter will begin its first hot metal production
by mid-2008.
