Training and Development

In relation to creation of new skilled employment opportunities Sohar Aluminium and its prime contractor, Bechtel, have been very active. In order to meet its Omanisation objective Bechtel has recruited and trained, in a six-month program of classroom and practical activities related to construction, 800 men and women from the local area of Batinah. Following the training the new recruits have been inducted into the construction workforce.

Sohar Aluminium will select many of its operating staff from the trainee group. In addition, Sohar Aluminium has recruited around 130 technical trainees over the past two years and placed them in a 12-month training program before being assigned to an operation function in the new smelter.

Training is also given to smelter staff in the different operating areas by the technology supplier, Alcan, in France and other smelters around the world and at the new training facility at the plant in Sohar, where a total of 18 courses involving 189 participants are currently being delivered.

Sohar Aluminium has made a major contribution to the creation of skilled job opportunities in Sohar. Further opportunities will also be created in the downstream industries as they develop.
