Sohar Aluminium has achieved the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s (ASI) Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification with Provisional status for its smelting and casthouse facility. This is the first ASI Certification achieved by an Omani company, which enhances the company’s contribution to support and enable the local Aluminum industry, and efforts of diversifying the national economy of the Sultanate of Oman.
The independent, third-party audit of Sohar Aluminium’s operation was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
Engineer Said Al Masoudi, CEO of Sohar Aluminium (SA) said, “We have always aspired to be a world-class and a pioneer industrial company. It is a crucial step in our journey and commitment towards adopting ESGs, by operating and managing our business and operations responsibly and sustainably. We are proud of being the first Omani company to obtain this certification”.
Al Masoudi added: “Undoubtedly, our commitment to protecting the environment, implementing high and safe working standards for our workforce, maintaining excellent relations with our stakeholders, and committing to transparent policies and moral responsibilities contributed to reaching this outstanding status”.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We congratulate Sohar Aluminium on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status, the first ASI Certification in Oman. Embracing sustainability involves a continuous process of evaluating and implementing comprehensive, positive transformations. ASI Certification empowers companies at various stages of this journey to evaluate their manufacturing practices against ESG criteria and serves as a platform and guide for continual improvement.”
The ASI Certification programme was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the Aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. A certification with Provisional status provides a one-year certification period during which corrective actions can be undertaken, enabling the company to then achieve Full certification at its next surveillance audit.
